Recycling lives gains ISO Accreditation 14001 & 9001

As a company we have been working towards ISO accreditation. ISO is an international standard which is becoming more and more necessary to have in order to gain more contracts and work and therefore keep the business expanding.

There are two awards which we have gone for: ISO 9001:2008 focusing on quality and ISO 14001:2004 which focuses on environment. Both standards look at the following;
  1. How we plan what we do and what our objectives are as a company.
  2. How we manage our resources – i.e. health and safety, maintenance of facilities and sites and how we manage our employees.
  3. How we operate the business – what are the actual day to day processes?
  4. Measure and improve – looks at how we assess our performance and how we look to improve it.

The process is ongoing and we will be reassessed again to ensure we keep up the good work. The improvements affect everyone and are not merely a paper based exercise – better communication is key and this is one part of our push for excellence. To achieve this we looked at everything we do and came up with an in-house ISO operating manual. This is, in effect, the bible of how we run and is available for any member of staff to read via their line manager. This was collated and is maintained by Chris Wylie with input from all the line managers.

We then trained Chris Wylie, Robert Jackson and Tom Carysforth-Nadin on how to do internal audits so that we can self police to ensure that we are following the procedures which have been set out. The team have been visiting the different sites over the last few months to ensure this is the case. Finally, between 2nd and 5th February we underwent the full external audit to see whether we would be granted the awards. This audit went into great depth and looked at all the above aspects.

The assessors were hugely impressed with the company and all of our employees so a big thank-you and congratulations to everyone who makes the company what it is.

Recycling Lives offers good Corporate Social Responsibility.

Recycling Lives operates nationally to provide a wide range of recycling activities to Local Authorities, commercial organisations and the public. Recycling Lives provides housing, training and long term employment in the recycling sector, to people who would otherwise be homeless; including ex-armed forces personnel, probation and those from chaotic backgrounds.

Each Recycling Lives centre provides up to 48 quality en-suite rooms; training and office facilities; incubator units for entrepreneurs in social enterprise; industrial space for our recycling processes and retail space to sell good manufactured by Recycling Lives from recycled waste.

We do not ask for, or rely on 'gifts' from you, as we always pay fair prices for scrap metal recycling, plastic and other recyclables. By selling your waste to Recycling Lives your organisation helps us to be sustainable and you to show good corporate social responsibility.

Our social enterprise 'manages' good Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) on your behalf, by ensuring that our recycling activities are carried out by employees that would otherwise be marginalised or even forgotten by society.
