A huge increase over the past few years in the use of Flat panel displays is creating its own set of problems for dismantling and recycling at their end of life. The more conventional computer monitors and television sets pose little problem to breakdown and there are procedures already in place to recycle them. FPD’s are made up from completely different technologies, using different chemicals and components, which require a wide range of solutions for them to be recycled safely.
The aim of the breakdown trails is to provide a range of information about dismantling FPD equipment in comparison to older type screens and monitors. Great detail will be given to labour costs, financial overheads, transportation, new recycling technologies and the safe disposal of hazardous waste so as to comply with Annex II of the WEEE directive 2002/96/EC. The trials will involve the weighing, tagging and analysing of all samples taken from many differing makes and models of FPD’s in order that accurate costings can be determined.
At the end of the study Recycling Lives will be able to offer a competitive price structure for the safe, responsible disposal of end of life Flat panel display equipment.
