Chris Newton from the Rapha Condor Recycling team proved his class at the weekend in achieving a bronze medal in the point’s race at the Olympics in Beijing. Middlesbrough born Newton 33, raced to an excellent third position behind Spanish rider Joan Llaneras and Germany’s Roger Kluge. The medal will be well received by Newton who 4 years earlier in Athens failed to finish the race.
Newton said: "I knew he (Llaneras) was one of the strongest riders out there, but in this race, it's a game of cat and mouse.
"There are so many tactics but you always have the same guy out in the front.
"I was very calm before today. I didn't think I was ready until I pulled on the skin suit and everything just kicked into gear.
"It means a lot (to be at his fourth Olympics). I've done the team pursuit before, but this one is my only event.
"With the mechanical hitch back in Athens in the men's points race (where he failed to finish the race), this all makes up for that.
"It means so much to my wife and my baby girl back home.
"I haven't seen them all very much for the past year."
Considering Newton’s season had started with him breaking his collarbone this represents a fantastic accolade and we congratulate his efforts. Well done Chris from everyone here at Recycling Lives and a big well done from our CEO Charles Jackson who has supported Chris and the rest of the team over the past 3 years.
