Sod-cutting ceremony marks the real start of building work!
It was on a rainy leap-day, 29th February 2008, that work officially began on the construction of the new Recycling Lives Centre in Kent Street Preston following the completion of demolition of the old Kedder Training Centre. Gathered to mark the occasion of the ground-cutting was Councillor Neil Cartwright, Cabinet Member for Development at Preston City Council, who are supporting the creation of Recycling Lives in several ways. Also present were, from right to left in the photograph:
- Jonathan Taylor, Trustee of Recycling Lives
- Steve Jackson, Director of Recycling.co.uk
- Rebecca Wilson, Trustee of Recycling Lives
- Kath Derbyshire, Trustee of Emmaus Preston
- Sean Lanson, Managing Director of RBL Construction, the building contractor
- Kevin Mordue, Senior Housing Officer, Preston City Council
- Gordon Aitken, Quantity Surveyor, Gordon Aitken Associates Limited
- Martin Smith, Architect, MCK Partnership
- Simon Thorrington, Recycling Lives Project Manager
Work is expected to take around 8 or 9 months and so the great hope is that the first Recycling Lives Centre will be open for residents in December 2008, traditionally one of the most difficult times of the year for those who are homeless. Steve Jackson, local businessman and main sponsor of Recycling Lives, said “
It is fantastic that we are properly under way, and I really hope that we can be ready in good time to offer accommodation for Christmas this year. Residents will have their own room with ensuite facilities, and fabulous surroundings, and will be given all the help and support they need, not just a bed and comfortable accommodation, but access to training, education and work experience to set them up for the rest of their lives.”
