RECYCLING Lives Makes Major Investment to Reduce Landfill

August 25, 2010

COMMERCIAL recycler and social welfare charity, Recycling Lives, has installed a new £150,000 trommel screening plant as part of its commitment to reducing the amount of waste being sent to landfill.

The trommel screening plant has been installed at Recycling Lives Red Scar site and reduces the amount of waste previously destined for landfill by around 90 per cent.

The trommel segregates a mixed waste stream of hardcore, soil, wood, plastics, paper, cardboard, cloth, plus ferrous and non-ferrous metals, with the help of seven specially trained employees.

From the moment the mix waste enters the trommel, it is broken down and small particles such as soil are sifted out and used as filling material or landfill coverage.

The waste stream is then set out on a picking belt and the trained operatives remove any wood, plastic, cardboard and compostable green waste; making further recycled revenue streams.

All the remaining waste then continues through the plant, and an overband magnet collects any scrap metal separating ferrous from non-ferrous metals; before it passes by an air knife fan, which removes all traces of small particles, leaving only clean hardcore which can be sold for use in building foundations or roads.

Only the non recyclable waste is sent to landfill; equating to one tonne out of every 10 tonnes of mix waste fed into the machine.

Recycling Lives has also invested £120,000 in other plant machinery to feed the trommel screen, including a telescopic loading shovel, a grab excavator and hundreds of full size eight tonne builders skips.

Recycling Lives Chairman and Founder Steven Jackson said: “This installation is another significant step forwards for Recycling Lives as it means that we can now offer a complete recycling package for all types of waste.

“Many people have contacted me in recent months under the mistaken belief that by dealing with Jacksons Skip Hire they are aiding the expansion of Recycling Lives. This is not the case, as the Jackson family behind Recycling Lives is not connected to Jackson’s Skip Hire.

“I welcome any clients that contact Recycling Lives and support the development of our new centres simply by allowing us to take away their commercial waste or household rubbish.”

Recycling Lives is more than an award winning commercial recycler and waste management solution; it is also a social welfare charity that provides a unique solution to the growing national problems of worklessness, homelessness and welfare dependency.

As a company, Recycling Lives has been widely recognised as a recycling and waste management sector leader for more than 40 years, for taking into account the economic, social and environmental impacts of its business operations and for offering opportunities to those facing an uncertain future; through accommodation, education, training and work experience.
